This Month at The Red Door Church:

1 John is a five chapter master piece. John Wesley believed that 1 John contained the purest, most distilled version
of the gospel in the entire Bible - “We love because God loved us first.” For Wesley, this changed everything. He read from, preached, and quoted 1 John more than any other book of the Bible by far. While we are accustomed to reading 1 John as a letter, it lacks all the typical marks of an ancient letter and reads more like a sermon - cyclical and meditative - and asserting important key themes. God is light. God is love. God is life. When we know who God is, we know who we are. Fred Craddock says it this way: “1 John isn’t the beginning of Christian doctrine - it is the fruit.

1 John assumes you have met Jesus. Now it wants to know: what difference is that making in your neighborhood?”

July 6

Scripture: 1 John 1:1-2:6
Sermon: A Call to Integrity

This week will be an introduction to the book itself as well as John Wesley’s thoughts about it. The heart of the message will be 1:5-10 - God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. As followers of the God of pure light, we are called to reflect that light. This is a call to integrity and a rejection of hypocrisy.

July 13

Scripture: 1 John 3:14-24
Sermon: A Call to Solidarity

“All one’s works must promote the welfare of one’s neighbor.” If we are
alive in Christ, love flows out of us, in words, perspective and action. In 1
John, love is not just a nice idea, but a countercultural act of resistance to death dealing systems. John Wesley used this text as the foundation for “practice holiness.”

July 20

Scripture: 1 John 4:7-21
Sermon: A Call to Love First

This passage contains, for Wesley, the most distilled version of the gospel - We love because God loved us
first.” This is the foundational text for
Wesley’s teaching of prevenient grace - the grace that goes before. The grace
that is active in our lives before we even know it. We too are called to love others with a prevenient kind of love.

July 27

Scripture: 1 John 5:1-9
Sermon: A Call to Remember

The community of 1 John was facing a crisis. Former members were denying that Jesus was the Messiah, God in the flesh, fully human. The community was confused, afraid, and unsure of what to do. Who should they believe? How should they react? 1 John’s simple, confident response is still relevant: you know who you are and you know whose you are. Focus on living the faith
you know.

Sunday Worship

There’s something sacred about Sundays—a time to pause, to breathe, to gather, and to be reminded of who we are and whose we are. At The Red Door Church – First United Methodist Church of Crestline, worship is the heart of our life together. Every Sunday at 10:30 AM, we come together—young and old, lifelong believers and curious seekers—for a time of music, prayer, and a message that meets us where we are and calls us deeper into God’s love.

Our worship blends the best of the old and the new—some Sundays, you’ll hear a beloved hymn that takes you back; other Sundays, a modern song that lifts your heart in a new way. Every Sunday, we pray, we listen, we worship, and we go back into the world renewed and ready to love as Jesus loves. We celebrate Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month where everyone is welcome at Christ’s table of grace.

Come as you are—really. You’ll see folks in their Sunday best and others in jeans and T-shirts. We believe God meets us where we are, and we try to do the same. We offer a staffed nursery for our littlest ones and sensory-friendly items for kids who need them, because everyone belongs here.

So, whether you’re looking for a faith community, a fresh start, or just a place to sit with God for a while, there is a place for you here. Come and see what God is doing. Come and be part of it.
